Farmers' Insurance Protest Disrupts Traffic in Hamburg for Two Days
A farmers' insurance protest in Harburg, Hamburg, disrupted streets and caused significant traffic disruptions for two consecutive days. The protests, which began on Monday and continued into Tuesday, saw around 75 tractors and up to 500 protesters take part.
The blockades, which were set up on key roads such as the A7 and around the Finkenwerder Ring and the Waltershof junction, caused a long traffic jam that reached far beyond the Marmstorf junction. Many people spent hours on their way home from work on Monday evening due to the protests.
On Tuesday morning, approximately 40 tractors and about 50 people were still on site, maintaining the blockades. The protesters had initially ended their blockade around 07:30, but smaller groups were guided towards the state border under police escort.
The police have initiated criminal investigations against the blockers on suspicion of coercion and conducting unannounced assemblies. The further investigations in this matter are being led by the State Protection Department of the State Criminal Police Office (LKA 7). Numerous administrative offense proceedings have also been initiated in connection with the participation in the blockades.
Despite repeated requests from the police to dismantle the blockades, they were not complied with. The police forces continued to exchange with the protesters while preparing measures to dissolve the blockades. However, as of the time of writing, there are no specific publicly available details about when the police will dissolve the next farmers' insurance protest blockades in Hamburg.
The protests in the city center were disbanded, but the blockades around the Finkenwerder Ring and the Waltershof junction were maintained. The traffic disruptions in the south of the city continued on Tuesday, causing heavy traffic congestion.
The blockades are set to continue, with no end in sight for the farmers' insurance protest in Hamburg. It remains to be seen how long the disruptions will last and when the situation will return to normal.
