Protests at Together For Palestine, with Charithra Chandran asking, "What's backlash when lives are at stake?"
In a powerful display of solidarity, the "Together For Palestine" concert took place at London's Wembley Arena on Wednesday, September 17. The event, organised and curated by Brian Eno, brought together a diverse group of artists and celebrities, including Eric Cantona, PinkPantheress, Richard Gere, Benedict Cumberbatch, Florence Pugh, Nicola Coughlan, Damon Albarn, Paul Weller, Rachel Chinouriri, Yasiin Bey, and more.
The concert occurred a day after a UN commission concluded that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza. Amidst these serious allegations, Israel denies accusations of genocide or war crimes.
During the event, Charithra Chandran, known for her roles in Bridgerton and Star Wars, spoke to NME about the critical state of affairs in Palestine. Chandran asserted that the situation has reached a critical mass where the occurrence of genocide and ethnic cleansing can't be denied.
Chandran emphasised the importance of using her platform to speak out and advocate for those who need it, especially in the Palestinian cause. She highlighted the role of art in influencing people, providing hope, and driving change. Being part of a community of like-minded people, she said, is crucial in such situations.
The concert raised approximately £1.5 million for the 'Together For Palestine Fund'. The donations from this campaign will be distributed to Palestinian-led organisations such as Taawon, the Palestine Children's Relief Fund, and the Palestine Medical Relief Society.
Chandran's comments underscored the connection between music, culture, and political change. She argued that the concert's scale, given the critical state of affairs, is a sad indictment of the situation. Hope, she pointed out, is crucial in the fight for change.
