Protests against violence in the Flotilla of Comune, Turin

In the heart of Turin, an interreligious round table was held as part of the "Peace TO Gaza" movement, a global initiative launched from Palazzo Civico. The event, organised by the Flotilla, aimed to express solidarity with those suffering violence in Gaza and to call for humanitarian corridors in the region.

Rossana Gonella of Sermig and Michele Borgia, the Flotilla's representative, were among those present. Gonella emphasised the need for solidarity with independent international organisations, while Borgia aimed to put pressure on governments to halt weapons shipments to Israel, stating that such actions are necessary to stop Israel's apartheid policies.

Claudio Torrero and Vice-Mayor Michela Favaro were also in attendance, believing that such initiatives help rediscover the value of fraternity in difficult times. Enzo Ferrara from the Sereno Regis Peace Studies Center expressed the need for politics to take responsibility, stating that there is an enormous absence of it in the current situation.

Giorgio Canarutto, speaking on behalf of certain organisations, emphasised the importance of resistance. Ferrara further noted that choosing violence, even for self-defence, is never rational, and that such actions only lead to an increase in violence. He stated, "Violence is becoming pervasive in reality, in institutions, and even in schools."

The Flotilla is not anti-Semitic, but anti-Zionist, as Borgia clarified. The group is particularly concerned about the people of Gaza dying of hunger and is seeking the Italian government to take a "real position" against a genocide.

Maria Elena Delia, the Italian spokesperson of the Flotilla, was connected from a humanitarian ship departing from Porto Palo, Sicily, bound for Gaza. Libera, another organisation supporting the Flotilla, emphasised the need for support in the final hours, with Andrea Turturro stating that the Flotilla is a contact for peace and dialogue, and each of us can do something.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) of Germany has also explicitly opposed weapons shipments to Palestine, announcing in August 2025 that his government would not issue new export permits for weapons that could be used in the Gaza Strip, although existing permits continue to be fulfilled.

The Flotilla's mission is in support of humanitarian corridors for Gaza and non-violent actions, aiming to bring about peace in the region. Canalis, a prominent Italian politician, stated that the point is "human solidarity" and that religions must return as actors of peace to achieve this.
