Protests against abortion and marathon occurrence under extensive law enforcement intervention
In the heart of Berlin this weekend, a unique blend of sporting and political events is unfolding. On Sunday, over 55,000 participants are expected to take part in the BMW Berlin Marathon, while more than 2,000 people gathered for the "March for Life" demonstration on Saturday.
To ensure the safety and security of both events, approximately 900 police officers have been deployed across the city. This makes it one of the largest deployments for a Berlin marathon, with officers stationed in Mitte, Charlottenburg, and Kreuzberg.
Due to the security measures, the marathon route may be subject to changes. Participants are advised to check the official marathon website for any updates regarding the route or security measures.
The weapon ban, in effect for both Saturday and Sunday, includes all types of knives, such as kitchen or pocket knives, as well as irritant, signal, and blank-firing weapons. This ban is in place for the safety and security of the marathon participants and spectators.
Initially, the demonstration was peaceful, according to police. However, several incidents occurred where people briefly blocked the route and ignored police requests to leave the street. In response, the police forcefully removed counter-protesters from the street. Counter-protesters advocating for abortion rights were also present on bicycles with posters.
The affected areas include Mitte district, specifically Friedrichstraße, Potsdamer Platz, Ebertstraße, Tiergartenstraße, and the Großer Stern. On Sunday, around 400 to 600 police officers were deployed throughout the morning to maintain order during the marathon.
Police advised drivers to avoid the city center to avoid any potential disruptions caused by the events. They also urged demonstrators to remain peaceful and respect the rules set in place to ensure the safety of all participants and spectators.
Despite the challenges, both events are expected to proceed smoothly, providing a vibrant display of Berlin's diversity and spirit.
