The halls of the Bundestag recently saw something extraordinary — a sea of vibrant colors instead of the usual muted outfits. Members from the Greens and the Left factions stepped into the plenary session donning green, yellow, orange, and red, forming a striking rainbow display. This bold move was a show of support for diversity while simultaneously protesting against Bundestag President Julia Klöckner.
The focus of the day was a debate on the escalating queerphobic hate crimes within the parliament. The Greens demanded that the government take firm action to counter these attacks on the safety and fundamental rights of queer people worldwide, particularly those with right-wing extremist connections.
A Controversial Stance on LGBTQ+ Rights
Meanwhile, the opposition parties also spoke up against Julia Klöckner's decisions concerning the Christopher Street Day in Berlin. In contrast to earlier years, the queer rainbow network of the Bundestag administration will not be allowed to participate in the event.
Previously, Julia Klöckner, a CDU member, decided that only the rainbow flag would be hoisted at the Reichstag building on the International Day against Homophobia (17th May), but not for the Berlin CSD. Klöckner justified this move with the "neutrality requirement."
In response to these decisions, the ranks of the Left and Greens have voiced their disapproval, both verbally and visually through their choice of colorful clothing in the Bundestag. Green Party MP Katrin Goering-Eckardt wrote, "It's just a symbol. But one that makes a difference for many." Till Steffens, her faction colleague, also sent a message to Julia Klöckner, accompanied by a photo of the rainbow action.
MPs can wear such attire without fear of reprimand. Although shirts with slogans are not allowed in the Bundestag, there are no rules regarding the choice of colors.
