Protesting individuals and law enforcement officers engaged in physical altercations in Lyon, France, resulting in a journalist getting hurt.
French Journalist Injured During Protest in Lyon
A French television journalist was injured during clashes between law enforcement and protesters in Lyon on September 18, 2023. The incident occurred around 12:30 PM during a day's protest, which was part of a larger mobilization in France.
According to a camera operator, a projectile landed on the journalist's bag and exploded, causing the journalist to be injured in the back. The journalist sustained superficial burns and concussions and is being taken to the hospital. A colleague fears that the consequences could have been much worse if the projectile had hit the journalist's face.
The prefecture reported that there were many projectiles and mortar (firework) shots at the police during the clashes. Law enforcement used tear gas and stun grenades in response to the projectiles thrown by masked protesters. Two police officers were also injured during the clashes, one of whom lost a tooth.
Three people were arrested for projectile throwing or attempted blockades at the end of the protest. However, the search results do not provide information about the identity or affiliations of the arrested individuals.
Delphine Ernotte, the president of France Télévisions, expresses support for the injured journalist and the reporting team. Ernotte praises the work of all newsrooms in the name of the freedom to inform.
The march resumed shortly after 1:00 PM and ended at Place Bellecour. The pre-march was composed of many at-risk individuals who prevented the unions from advancing. France Télévisions is unsure if the projectile that injured the journalist was a mortar (firework) or a police grenade.
This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers that journalists face while reporting on events such as these. It is crucial that everyone involved in these protests remains peaceful and respectful of the rights of others, including the press.
