A Massive Outcry Against the Annual Far-Right Parade in Demmin

Mass demonstration against the right-wing rally staged in Demmin - Protesters strongly opposing right-wing rally take to streets in Demmin

A whopping crowd, as claimed by organizers, rallied in Demmin (Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district) against the yearly spectacle of far-right extremists. An estimated 4,000 people, a significant rise compared to previous years, took part in the anti-parade, according to the "Action Alliance 8 May Demmin". The police put the number of protesters at around 2,000. In contrast, only about 600 were present according to police reports back in 2024.

The far-right party "Die Heimat" (formerly NPD) organized a so-called mourning parade in the small town due to the mass suicide on the brink of World War II’s end, 80 years ago. For years, far-right extremists have been marching silently through the city on the Peene on May 8th. This time, the police counted around 290 participants.

Critics and scholars view this parade as an attempt to exploit the events in Demmin. The chosen date, devoid of any connection to the mass suicide, already hints at this, stated a representative from the alliance. In reality, the far-right extremists are mourning the downfall of the Wehrmacht.

Historians pinpoint the unprecedented mass suicide in Demmin, where hundreds took their lives out of fear of the Red Army, to the days between April 30th and May 3rd.

The counter-parade participants attempted to block the far-right parade with multiple sit-ins and a road-blocking bus. The far-right extremists were forced to divert from their planned route. The planned wreath-laying failed to take place.

The participants of the counter-event traveled by bus from cities like Berlin, Hamburg, or Hannover. According to police reports, the demonstrations remained peaceful: there were no injuries or arrests.

Unraveling the Far-Right Parade

A closer look at this annual event reveals some alarming patterns:

  • Manipulation of History: The far-right leverages this parade to warp historical events, using the tragic suicide incident to stoke anti-communist and anti-Soviet sentiments, while ignoring the broader context of Nazi Germany's aggressive policies and atrocities.
  • Extremist Propaganda: The parade serves as a platform for far-right extremists to advance their divisive ideologies, fueled by hate speech, racism, and xenophobia. Protesters argue that these ideologies are detrimental to the core principles of democracy and equality.
  • Community Strife: The annual gatherings often create tension within the local community, seen as divisive and unwelcome by many residents and left-leaning groups.

In essence, the parade continues to be a hotly debated topic due to the extremist motivations behind it and the potential for escalating divisive and harmful ideologies.
