Protesters gather outside Trump's meeting with the King, as Kate receives a compliment within
In a historic turn of events, Donald Trump and Melania Trump have arrived in the United Kingdom for a state visit, marking the largest welcoming ceremony in the country since records began. The grand affair at Windsor Castle saw the innermost circle of the royal family in attendance, including King Charles III, Queen Camilla, Prince William, and his wife, Princess Kate.
However, the visit has not been without controversy. The Epstein scandal has reached the royal family, with allegations involving Prince Andrew. One of Epstein's victims has accused Prince Andrew of sexually abusing her when she was a minor. The Prince has always denied these allegations, and a lawsuit ended in a settlement.
Just last week, Prime Minister Keir Starmer had to recall his ambassador to Washington after it was revealed that he had close ties to Epstein. The Prime Minister with whom Trump will meet on Thursday is Keir Starmer. The meeting will take place at the Chequers estate during Trump's state visit.
The state visit has also sparked protests, with thousands of people demonstrating against Trump's visit in London, organised by the 'Stop Trump Coalition'. Protesters held signs reading 'No to Racism. No to Trump', and some creative anti-Trump masks were also seen. Activists even projected images of Trump and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein onto a tower of Windsor Castle as Air Force One landed. Four people were reportedly arrested.
Despite the controversies, the visit has also seen moments of diplomatic camaraderie. The national anthems of both countries were played during the drive through the castle gardens, and the U.S. President, Donald Trump, vehemently denies any involvement in Epstein's crimes. Trump complimented Princess Kate by saying 'beautiful'.
The British government announced a 'Technology Prosperity Pact' with Washington, involving multi-billion dollar U.S. investments. In May, both countries also announced a deal offering the United Kingdom significantly lower tariffs for exports to the U.S. than other Western partners. However, the hoped-for removal of steel and aluminum tariffs is not expected to happen soon.
During the reception, a minor commotion was caused when a man dressed as a shaman was ushered back onto the sidewalk by the police. Sixty-three-year-old retiree Tim Miles, at the state visit, has a red baseball cap that reads: 'Make America Go Away'.
The visit will culminate in a grand state banquet, with speeches from the King and Trump. The banquet is scheduled to take place in the evening. The scale of the military ceremony and the state visit, despite the controversies, underscore the enduring relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom.
