The Election Commission (EC) of Bangladesh has announced hearing dates for the redefinition of parliamentary constituencies, with the first hearing scheduled for 24 August at the Election Bhaban in Agargaon, Dhaka. This decision has sparked controversy, particularly in the Jashore district, where the proposed changes could alter the boundaries of several constituencies.

At the heart of the controversy is the proposed Jashore-6 constituency, which, if implemented, would incorporate Keshabpur upazila from the current Jashore-5 constituency. This change has been advocated by MR. MOHAMMAD ENAMUR RAHMAN, who submitted a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) on 6 August.

The proposed redefinition of constituencies has not been met without opposition. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has organised a series of protests against the changes, particularly concerning Constituency No. 90 (Jashore-6) and 88 (Jashore-3). A press conference was held at the Jashore Press Club in the afternoon, attended by senior BNP leaders and representatives of the party's youth wing, Jubo Dal, and the Volunteer Front.

The BNP alleges that the proposed changes are part of a conspiracy to delay the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for February. Vice-Chairman Professor Nargis Begum, General Secretary Delwar Hossain Khokon, District Organizing Secretary Robiul Islam, and other BNP leaders were present at the press conference, where they voiced their opposition to the redefinition of constituencies.

The region in question is currently divided into Jashore-4, 5, and 6 constituencies, administered by three separate Members of Parliament (MPs). The BNP argues that these divisions have led to developmental exclusion, citing the case of Abhoynagar area and its adjacent areas, which are divided among three separate constituencies of Jashore.

To address long-standing issues such as waterlogging in the Bhabdaha, it was proposed that Abhoynagar upazila, six unions of Monirampur, and three unions of Keshabpur be incorporated under Constituency No. 90 (Jashore-6). Similarly, the Jashore-4 constituency would need to be redefined by including five unions of Sadar upazila, currently under Jashore-3, along with Bagharpara.

The EC has reviewed over 1,760 objections and claims, including those concerning Jashore-3 and Jashore-6, before making its final decisions. The EC will hear these cases during the scheduled hearings, providing an opportunity for all parties to voice their concerns and arguments.

The controversy surrounding the proposed redefinition of Jashore constituencies is a complex issue, with both supporters and opponents presenting compelling arguments. As the hearings approach, it remains to be seen how the EC will address these concerns and make its final decisions.
