Protesters disrupt photo opportunity as Vance and Hegseth express gratitude to DC National Guard
Vice President JD Vance Booed by Protesters During Visit to National Guard Troops
Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller paid a visit to National Guard troops stationed at Union Station in Washington, D.C. The group was there to show support and express gratitude to the National Guard troops who have been deployed to the city as part of President Donald Trump's initiative.
The visit took place at a Shake Shack, just blocks from the U.S. Capitol. However, the event was not without controversy. As Vance, Hegseth, and Miller arrived, protesters could be heard shouting "Free D.C." The chants continued inside the Shake Shack, drowning out much of what the officials had to say as they tried to speak to reporters.
Vice President Vance expressed concerns about the safety of Union Station, stating that it was being overrun with homeless people. He also believes that crime statistics in Washington D.C. do not fully represent the extent of street crime. Vance stated that the protesters seem to hate the idea that Americans can enjoy their communities. In response to the jeers from the protesters, Vance and Miller dismissed them, calling them "crazy" and "communists."
The National Guard troops were deployed to the city to temporarily take over the city police force amid security concerns. Vance did not comment on the reasons for the National Guard's deployment to specific areas of the city.
Defense Secretary Hegseth and White House deputy chief of staff Miller were also booed during the same event. The visit to Union Station marked the latest in a series of high-profile appearances by Trump administration officials in Washington, D.C. as the city grapples with ongoing protests and unrest.
Vance stated that Union Station should be a symbol of American greatness. Despite the protests, the Vice President and the other officials remained focused on thanking the National Guard troops for their service and expressing support for their efforts to maintain law and order in the city.
