Protesters at an ICE facility in Illinois ignite conflicts, denouncing a deportation operation
In a tense turn of events on September 19, 2020, four individuals were arrested by federal authorities at the Broadview ICE Processing Center. The protest, organised against Operation Midway Blitz – an effort by the Trump administration for mass deportations in sanctuary cities – saw dozens of activists trying to crash doors of the facility, aiming to disrupt the work within.
The clashes between federal agents and protesters resulted in the application of chemical irritants, as ICE officials and Department of Homeland Security officers responded with pepper balls and tear gas. The incident has highlighted a rising tension regarding immigration enforcement, with groups lamenting the overuse of force by the agents.
Among those arrested was Democrat Villa, a politician who live-streamed following ICE vehicles and was arrested amid the clashes. Democrat congressional candidate Kat Abughazaleh was also among the victims, being pushed to the ground by agents and sustaining a bruised hand. Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss was a victim too, being struck by tear gas and falling to the ground due to incapacity to breathe.
Rioters allegedly assaulted law enforcement, returned tear gas canisters to agents, slashed tires on a government vehicle, and trespassed. Federal authorities are accusing the protesters of illegally disrupting the work of agents and threatening the livelihood of the officers.
The Department of Homeland Security released a statement about the actions of rioters, condemning the violence and vandalism that occurred during the protest. The statement emphasised the importance of maintaining peace and order, while allowing for the lawful and necessary operations of ICE.
The incident has sparked widespread debate, with many questioning the necessity and methods of Operation Midway Blitz, and others expressing concern over the use of force by federal agents during protests. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains clear that the issue of immigration enforcement will remain a contentious one.
