Protesters apprehend several NYC administrators outside ICE headquarters in Manhattan

In a series of events that unfolded on Thursday, New York City Comptroller and mayoral candidate Brad Lander was among 71 individuals arrested during a protest at a government building in Manhattan. The building, 26 Federal Plaza, houses an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office and has been the scene of numerous protests in recent months amid the Trump administration's immigration crackdown.

Lander was arrested for the second time this year at the same location. Previously, he was arrested in June while accompanying people to immigration court visits. He was not charged following his arrest on Thursday. New York ABC station WABC reported that Lander and the other elected officials who were arrested would be given police summonses and then be released.

The protest was aimed at demanding access to the facility's 10th floor to conduct oversight of conditions in ICE's de facto detention facility. Elected officials, including Lander, were seeking to ensure the well-being of detainees amid reports of poor conditions and allegations of mistreatment.

Earlier this week, a federal judge ordered the Trump administration to improve conditions for detained migrants at the holding facility inside the building. The judge also blocked the administration from deporting unaccompanied minors to Guatemala.

It's worth noting that, separate from these events, sources indicate that Trump is poised to fire the US attorney for resisting an effort to charge the New York Attorney General. This development, while not directly related to the protest and the arrest of Brad Lander, adds to the broader context of political tensions surrounding immigration and law enforcement in the United States.

Following the protests, the building at 26 Federal Plaza was placed on lockdown due to a bomb threat, according to the Department of Homeland Security. However, no explosive devices were found.

Besides Brad Lander, the search results do not provide information about any other individuals arrested at 26 Federal Plaza in Manhattan during a protest at the immigration office on Thursday. The arrests mark a continuation of the ongoing protests against the Trump administration's immigration policies.
