Protest march showcasing cultural support journeying through Neustadt
In the heart of Dresden, the 10th edition of dasKONZERTs took place on September 16, 2025, transforming the vibrant Neustadt quarter into an unconventional concert venue. This event, a protest against cuts in the cultural sector, served as an artistic contribution to protest culture.
The musical-performative program was curated by the Lower Complaints Office and members of the Central Workshop Choir. Noise guitarist Cyril Ferrari accompanied the mobile part of the program with discordant sounds, setting the tone for an evening of creative expression.
The audience was encouraged to actively participate, with anything that makes noise being welcome. This inclusive approach created a unique atmosphere, where the boundaries between performer and spectator blurred.
The closing performance was led by the Polish-Ukrainian 31st Duo, featuring Mariia Lemperk and D. Kowalik. Their performance was a powerful conclusion to a night dedicated to making a statement about the state of culture in Dresden.
The concert series aims to highlight the relevance of free culture in Dresden and beyond. In autumn 2025, the series will take to the streets, turning public spaces into concert halls.
Interestingly, a new book about the Neustadt has been published, with one author photographing the quarter and the other writing about it. The Lower Complaints Office, the driving force behind dasKONZERTs, also has a website at untere-reklamationsbehoerde.de for those who wish to learn more about their work.
It's worth noting that this wasn't the only event in the Neustadt that day. A demonstration with around 200 participants marched through the quarter, adding to the day's cultural activities.
