Protests in Thailand Continue Over Border Dispute and Political Leadership

In Bangkok, protests led by political activist Jatuporn Prompan have been ongoing at the Victory Monument since June 2025. The primary demand of the rally is the resignation of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.

On June 28, 2025, Jatuporn spoke at the rally, organized by the "Uniting the Power of the Land for the Defence of Thai Sovereignty" group. He urged supporters to prepare for a sustained overnight occupation, stating they will stay until the government that sells out the nation is gone.

Jatuporn described the government's actions in the Thai-Cambodian border dispute as an act of national betrayal, particularly the perceived surrendering of the Ta Kwai temple area through the ceasefire agreement. He also criticized the involvement of the US and Cambodia in the negotiations.

Despite reports suggesting that the Entertainment Complex Bill, 99-year land leases to foreigners, and a proposed mega-project in the South could be potential triggers for protests, the current focus of Jatuporn's protests remains on the border dispute crisis and political leadership. The protest themes are firmly rooted in national sovereignty, border security, and government responsibility.

The protest movement has vowed to escalate its actions, with plans to march directly to Government House to oust the government. The tone of the protests is strongly nationalist, condemning perceived territorial concessions.

As of early August 2025, there are no reports of clear linkage or escalation plans regarding the Entertainment Complex Bill, 99-year land leases, or Southern mega-project issues in the current protest activities. However, Jatuporn warned that if the Constitutional Court orders Paetongtarn to suspend her duties and she refuses, the protest movement will escalate further.
