In a bold move, the Kiel branch of the Young Socialists (Jusos) in Germany has proposed a motion to ban certain men's podcasts, including Hoss & Hopf, due to their alleged promotion of toxic masculinity ideals and the 'alpha mindset.' The motion, titled 'Ban men's podcasts! - Take the microphones away from men!', is set to be debated at the SPD youth organisation's state delegate conference. It claims that podcasts like Hoss & Hopf and those associated with Andrew Tate have become a dangerous phenomenon over the past two years, uncritically glorifying ideals of toxic masculinity and the 'alpha mindset,' spreading sexist stereotypes, discriminatory statements, pseudoscientific theories, and numerous conspiracy theories. Hosted by Philip Hopf and Kiarash Hossainpour, Hoss & Hopf has gained a significant following, with nearly half a million YouTube subscribers and popularity on Spotify. The podcast reaches a large young, male, and often more conservative audience through discussions on finance, politics, and masculinity. Jusos emphasises that freedom of expression in Germany is an important asset in their democracy. However, they argue that content promoting the 'real man' cult damages the 'basic democratic order.' The organisation warns that men who endanger democracy and openly spread sexist propaganda must be countered. The motion proposes pausing podcasts that violate the free democratic order and common sense until they submit an improvement plan. It also calls for a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about the harms of 'toxic male imagery' in digital media. The campaign aims to promote healthier alternatives to such content. Upon resuming, a female fact-checker must correct false claims during episodes of the podcasts. This is not the first time Hoss & Hopf has been accused of presenting pseudoscientific theories and numerous conspiracy theories. The podcast frequently features guests who spread sexist stereotypes and discriminatory statements. Jusos concludes by stating that they can no longer allow these men to be men. The debate on this motion is expected to stir strong opinions, reflecting the divisive nature of this issue in contemporary society.
