"Protest Against AfD Party's Ideologies": Masses Rally against Far-Right Group Ideologies
The city of Berlin witnessed a series of demonstrations over the weekend, as tens of thousands of people took to the streets to protest against the right-wing political party, the AfD. The farmer protest in Berlin was one of the separate demonstrations that occurred, with around 3,000 people participating in the Berlin-Lichtenberg demonstration.
Simultaneously, protests took place across the country, including one in Potsdam with approximately 10,000 participants. The demonstrations were part of the ongoing political heat in Germany, with signs at the Berlin events reading "Racism is no alternative" and "ban the AfD".
The Berlin-Lichtenberg demonstration, held by groups including social welfare organizations like Arbeiterwohlfahrt, Caritas, Diakonie, and others, was in protest of social sector budget cuts. The demonstrators were specifically against reductions that endanger free providers and social services. The authorities enforced the demonstration strictly due to its political significance and potential for large participation, demanding fair social financing and protection of vulnerable groups.
On Sunday, 14th January, a demo of approximately 25,000 people gathered at the Brandenburg Gate, expressing outrage over a reported secret far-right meeting between AfD politicians, right-wing extremists, and wealthy donors. The investigative news outlet Correctiv broke the story about the secret meeting, which allegedly involved discussions on mass deportation plans, including for German citizens.
The Berlin-Lichtenberg demonstration was reportedly met with violent police actions, and videos show bloodied protestors from the event. Police claimed the unrest was caused by the organizers broadcasting prohibited slogans through a loudspeaker.
As the week progresses, the farmer protest in Berlin continues, with the protestors braving the cold weather on Monday, 15th January. Meanwhile, another large-scale protest is currently underway in Berlin, honoring left-wing heroes Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg on the same day. The protests in Berlin are ongoing, with the city serving as a focal point for political dissent in Germany.
