Ella Seidel Shines at Cincinnati Masters, Achieves Career-Best Result

Ella Seidel, a 20-year-old tennis player from Hamburg, has stunned the tennis world with her impressive run at the 2025 Cincinnati Masters. As a qualifier, she reached the Round of 16, marking her best career result at WTA 1000 level.

Seidel's journey began with a nervy start against McCartney Kessler, where she won the first set despite many forced errors. Kessler, returning more focused after a bathroom break, dominated the second set. However, Seidel showed resilience, winning the third set in a thrilling tiebreak, saving two match points and converting her first match point after 2 hours and 24 minutes. This victory over Kessler, the 26-year-old American, was Seidel's biggest career achievement to date.

Seidel's success continued as she upset the eighth-seeded American Emma Navarro in the previous round. She also recorded a surprising win over the highly-rated Russian Polina Kudermetova. Her strong serve has been a key factor in her recent success.

As of August 2025, Seidel's career record stands at around 140 wins and 93 losses (60% win rate) across WTA, Grand Slams, and ITF tournaments. Although she has not yet won a WTA title, she made her WTA 1000 main draw debut at Cincinnati 2025 and produced major upsets.

Following her impressive performance, Seidel's ranking improved from No. 127 at the tournament start to around world No. 105. She will next face either French player Varvara Gracheva or Czech Karolina Muchova for a place in the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, in the men's draw of the WTA tournament in Ohio, Alexander Zverev is the only remaining German player. The total prize money for the tournament is around 5.2 million US dollars (approximately 4.5 million euros).

Laura Siegemund, Eva Lys, and Tatjana Maria have already been eliminated from the women's draw. The WTA tournament in Ohio serves as a warm-up for many professionals before the last Grand Slam tournament of the season in New York.

Seidel injured her right foot at her Wimbledon debut and did not feel she was yet in top form before the Cincinnati tournament. However, her recent victories suggest otherwise. Seidel's next challenge will be to convert her breakthrough into a maiden WTA title.
