Prosecutor's Office in Bochum Orders Swiss Corporation to Repay 9.8 Million Euros

The Public Prosecutor's Office Bochum has taken a significant step in the fight against illegal trade, with the seizure of €9,815,426.92 from a Swiss corporation. This seizure, which occurred on September 2, 2025, is a result of a standalone seizure procedure related to the illegal trade in mercury between 2011 and 2013.

The illegal trade of mercury, a toxic and hazardous substance, resulted in millions of euros in profits for the perpetrators. Approximately 1,000 tons of mercury were taken over by a company based in Essen and Dorsten, which should have been disposed of in accordance with legal regulations. Instead, the mercury was sold on the world market.

The perpetrators, who have already been convicted to several years of imprisonment, made their illicit gains between 2011 and 2013. The seizure of the funds is a result of the legislator's far-reaching seizure possibilities, which have been successfully applied in this case to deprive the perpetrators of their illegal earnings.

The Regional Court of Essen ordered the seizure, following a request from the specialized public prosecutor's office for the prosecution of economic and financial crimes in Bochum. The decision regarding the finality of the seizure is still ongoing.

For media inquiries, Dr. Klus at the Public Prosecutor's Office Bochum can be reached at the telephone number 0234 967-5425 or via email at [email protected]. The name of the Swiss stock corporation involved has not been disclosed in the public reports about the seizure.

The Public Prosecutor's Office Bochum is responsible for the prosecution of this case, marking a significant victory in the ongoing battle against the illegal trade of hazardous substances.
