In the aftermath of the tragic death of American influencer Charlie Kirk on September 10, the European far-right has demanded that the European Parliament pay tribute to him. However, the President of the Parliament refused to grant a minute of silence without explanation.

The National Rally and Reconquête, two far-right groups, immediately supported a proposal for a minute of silence in the European Parliament plenary for Kirk. This proposal was made by the European Conservatives and Reformists group. Yet, the silence of the parliamentarians in response to the far-right's demands lasted longer than a minute, as no other MEP expressed their opinion.

The speaker was the only voice against the unanimous condemnation of Kirk's assassination and the endorsement of his ideas. Out of 720 European MEPs, only the speaker spoke out against endorsing Kirk's ideas. The speaker's arguments, however, did not receive a response from any other parliamentarian.

Kirk, a fervent supporter of Donald Trump, was known for his controversial views. He was associated with glorifying racial segregation, slavery, misogyny, homophobia, hostility towards Ukraine, anti-Semitic remarks, calling for the death penalty for Joe Biden, and comparing abortion to the 21st century Holocaust.

The death of Kirk caused an outcry among his supporters and others. The European far-right, known for their patriotism and hostility towards globalization, have advocated for paying tribute to Kirk. Yet, the President of the Parliament remained firm in their decision not to grant a minute of silence.

In a surprising turn of events, Jordan Bardella, a French MEP from the National Rally, dared to hijack the slogan 'I am Charlie' in reference to Kirk. This move sparked further controversy and debate within the European Parliament.

As the European Parliament continues to grapple with the far-right's demands, the lone voice of the speaker serves as a reminder of the importance of free speech and critical thinking in democratic discourse.
