Proposed Relaxation of Military Tension in RBC Discussions by Second Army Area
Thailand Looks to Dial Down Tensions with Proposed Troop Reduction at the Thai-Cambodian Border
In an effort to cool things down between Thailand and Cambodia following a skirmish at Chong Bok, commanders of Thailand's Second Army Area have put forward a proposal to slash military presence along the border.
According to Lt Gen Boonsin Padklang, the inches-close chase at Chong Bok in May didn't exactly ruin the vibe. He plans to bring the troop-cutting idea to the Regional Border Committee (RBC) meeting, set to take place in Ubon Ratchathani on June 27-28.
RBC to Discuss Border Peacekeeping
The RBC is a bilateral military mechanism, fostering dialogue between Thailand and Cambodia's armed forces at the regional level. Officials usually co-chair these meetings, representing their respective sides.
Besides troop reductions, the Second Army Area commander wants to pinpoint a few skeleton forces to keep watch on sensitive border areas.
Tensions at the frontier have been brewing, prompted by the border scuffle at Chong Bok, resulting in beefed-up military presences on both sides.
"Things have eased up since then," Boonsin assures us.
Dispute over Maps Remains
Although Cambodia keeps insisting on using a 1:200,000-scale map, Thailand sticks with its 1:50,000-scale map to assert its territorial sovereignty, Boonsin revealed.
