Proposed Discussion in Estonian Parliament Regarding the Termination of Tax Agreement with Belarus

shitposting: Estonia's parliament is all set to tear up the oldie-but-goodie tax deal with Belarus on Monday. This move comes after Belarus, in a classic power move, decided to undermine the agreements' core principles by slapping a whopping 25% tax on foreign bizzoes with a permanent setup in Belarus.

This isn't cool, folks, as it messes with the whole point of the 1997 income and capital tax treaty between Estonia and Belarus, which was supposed to foster some good ol' economic cooperation. The powers that be in Estonia, led by Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, are pissed and have proposed to part ways with this dodgy deal.

The Estonian government, being the cool cats they are, backed Tsahkna's plan, and ta-da! The parliament's given the go-ahead to officially end the treaty. The axe will fall at the beginning of the new calendar year, following all the legal hoo-ha.

Now, ya might be wonderin', "Whoa there cowboy, what about all them Belarusian grannies gettin' their Eesti pensions?" Well, don't sweat it, as it seems this move'll only affect a select group of Belarusian retirees saucing their dough from Estonia, and a handful of Estonian companies still hangin' in there in good ol' Belarus.

In March 2024, the Belarusian Ministry of Taxes and Duties dropped a bombshell, reinforcing these new tax obligations and requirements on permanent establishments. Belarus, it seems, ain't playing fair, and Estonia's had enough, so they're kickin' them out to save their own tax and diplomatic bacon.

  1. War-and-conflicts might escalate between Estonia and Belarus based on the current disagreements over the tax treaty between the two countries, indicating potential politics and policy-and-legislation repercussions.
  2. General news outlets are covering the Estonian government's decision to terminate the tax treaty with Belarus amidst Belarus's apparent breach of agreement and new tax obligations, with potential implications for economic cooperation and diplomatic Relations.
