On an evening that was not the 100th day of his tenure, Chancellor Friedrich Merz convened a crucial meeting with his leadership circle at the Chancellery. The gathering, which took place at an unspecified hour, was marked by discussions centered around the state of the coalition with the SPD, cooperation within the coalition, and public sentiment.

Among those present were key figures such as Michael Kretschmer, Minister President of Saxony, Silvia Breher, Agriculture State Secretary, Karin Prien, Federal Minister of Education, and Karl-Josef Laumann, Health Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia. CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann was also in attendance.

The coalition government, which has been facing internal tensions and public dissatisfaction, was the focus of these discussions. Lingering uncertainties and struggles within the coalition, particularly on energy transition and budgetary issues, have led to a perception that the government is struggling to fulfill election promises.

Discontent within the coalition parties, including criticism for decisions made unilaterally by the Chancellor, has caused friction, especially with the CSU and SPD. The government's communication and political management have also been challenged, with only about 28% public satisfaction with the government after the first 100 days.

Internal disputes and cautious policy implementation have overshadowed the coalition's expected focus on economic recovery and keeping energy prices down. The leadership team also had to address the balance between assertive foreign policy positions and delays in delivering aid promised to partners like Ukraine, affecting both international credibility and domestic confidence.

The consultations emphasized the need to improve coordination and cooperation within the coalition, manage public perceptions more effectively, and navigate both internal coalition disputes and external policy challenges.

The government spokesman confirmed that these meetings took place at the Chancellery, and Merz was reportedly available for any necessary pre-talks during this time. The meetings were not solely focused on the state of the coalition with the SPD, cooperation within the coalition, and public sentiment, but also included discussions on other pressing matters.

After the meetings, Merz left the Chancellery around a different time than midnight, preparing for planned video conferences on Ukraine with US President Donald Trump and others. Despite the challenges faced by the coalition, Merz has positioned himself strongly on foreign and security policy and driven significant changes domestically.
