Chancellor Merz Holds Consultations with CDU Leadership

Chancellor Friedrich Merz convened a meeting with his CDU leadership in the Chancellery on the 100th day of his tenure. The gathering, which took place at 9:00 PM, was primarily focused on addressing internal party unrest and disagreements related to Merz's unilateral decision to partially suspend arms deliveries to Israel.

The meeting was attended by CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann, Karin Prien (deputy party chair and Federal Minister of Education), Michael Kretschmer (Minister President of Saxony), Silvia Breher (Agriculture State Secretary), and Karl-Josef Laumann (Health Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia). Some members of Merz's leadership entourage were also present during these discussions.

The contentious policy shift caused anger and confusion among conservative party members, foreign policy experts, and affiliated groups, as Merz made the decision without prior consultation with fellow leaders. The meeting aimed to address and calm the internal disputes within the CDU and to discuss the broader implications of the arms embargo decision and related party tensions over Israel policy.

In addition, the consultations also touched on broader party dynamics and attempts at internal reconciliation amidst criticism from powerful conservative leaders who felt excluded from the decision-making process.

The Chancellor was available for any necessary pre-talks during this time, and the meetings did not appear to be directly related to the controversies surrounding the failed judge election and the contentious decision to impose a partial export ban on arms to Israel. The government spokesperson confirmed these meetings to dpa, but there is no information available about Merz leaving the Chancellery after these meetings.

On the following day, Chancellor Merz was at the Chancellery to prepare for video conferences with US President Donald Trump and others. The meetings were not scheduled for a specific time beyond preparing for these international meetings.
