Proposed Changes to the King Charles III England Coast Path from Lyme Regis to Rufus Castle: Status of Objections Lodged
On the 8th of July, 2015, Natural England submitted a report to the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, proposing improved access to the coast between Lyme Regis and Rufus Castle, Portland.
Following the submission, an independent planning inspector was appointed to determine the proposals. The public inquiry concerning the objections received concluded on the 13th of December, 2016.
One of the objections concerned land at Littlesea on the East Fleet near Weymouth, owned by Bourne Leisure Ltd for Haven Leisure Ltd. Another objection was raised by Ilchester Estates regarding the West Fleet between Rodden and Abbotsbury.
The planning inspector has prepared a report and made a recommendation about these objections to the Secretary of State. However, no new information about the Secretary of State's initial mindset to determine that the proposals do not strike a fair balance regarding objections received was provided.
On December 13, 2016, the Secretary of State considered Ilchester Estates' objections regarding the West Fleet between Rodden and Abbotsbury. The recommendation was issued after this consideration.
The planning inspector's report and recommendation will be taken into account by the Secretary of State when deciding whether to approve Natural England's coastal access report for the stretch between Lyme Regis and Rufus Castle, Portland.
At present, we await the Secretary of State's decision on the matter. The public and stakeholders are eagerly awaiting the outcome, which could pave the way for improved coastal access in the region.
