At the Sixth World Conference of Parliamentary Presidents, held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Esteban Lazo Hernández, the President of the National Assembly of Popular Power and the Council of State in Cuba, emphasized the country's commitment to combating climate change.

Lazo Hernández underscored the importance of high political will and commitment to the people as key elements in the action of the Cuban Parliament. He also highlighted the implementation of Cuba's State Plan for Combating Climate Change, known as Tarea Vida, which was approved by the National Assembly in 2017.

"Tarea Vida" is central to Cuba’s strategy against climate change, Lazo explained, signifying the country’s commitment to managing and mitigating climate risks through national legislative support.

Lazo also emphasized that climate change affects all genders equally, underscoring its universal impact and the need for inclusive policies. This approach reflects Cuba’s focus on resilience and sustainable local development to reduce vulnerability and dependency, aligning with broader themes of strengthening internal capacities and boosting local production systems emphasized in related Cuban policy discussions.

In addition to the conference, Lazo met with the presidents of legislative organs of Small Island Developing States, recognizing the great challenges faced by these nations, particularly in combating climate change. He also had dialogues with Cubans residing in Switzerland and members of solidarity with Cuba in that nation.

In a separate meeting, Lazo held discussions with his Vietnamese counterpart, Tran Thanh Man, to strengthen bilateral ties. They discussed increasing exchange of delegations and contacts at all levels, coordinating closely, implementing measures for strengthening ties, and commemorating the 65th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations.

The topic of the conference was Parliamentary Leadership for Urgent Climate Action, and Lazo's remarks underscored Cuba's commitment to taking a leading role in addressing this global challenge.
