Parliament has approved a proposal put forth by the Socialist Party (PS) to create an Independent Technical Commission (CTI) to analyze the causes and operational failures of the recent wildfires that ravaged the country.

The CTI, as outlined in the PS's bill, will be composed of 12 specialist technicians of recognised merit. Their primary task will be to identify the operational failures recorded during the wildfires and provide recommendations for improving the forest fire defense model, both urgently and in the long term.

The CTI's mandate also includes evaluating the effectiveness of the public policies in place regarding forest fires. To ensure comprehensive analysis, the commission will conduct a comparative analysis of this year's rural wildfire campaign with the 2018-2024 period.

The proposal was met with mixed responses. While the PSD, CDS-PP, Livre, PAN, and JPP parties favourably voted for the proposal, the CHEGA and IL parties voted against it. The PCP abstained from voting. Notably, BE was not present during the vote.

The focus of the CTI's analysis, as stated in the PS's bill, is on the causes and operational failures of the wildfires. The final report, which is expected to be produced in a timely manner, will contain findings and recommendations for strengthening the forest fire defense model.

However, the head of the independent Technical Commission has not been explicitly named in the available sources, and there is no clear indication of when its confirmation is expected.

This move comes as the country grapples with the aftermath of the devastating wildfires, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the incidents and measures to prevent future disasters. The CTI's report is anticipated to provide crucial insights and actions for enhancing the country's forest fire defense system.
