Green Party's Transport Guru, Winfried Hermann, Pushes for a Modern Toll System on German Autobahns

- Proposals have already been put forth by the Commission.

Want that much-needed dollars for road renovation and upgrades, huh? That's where Winfried Hermann, our Transport Minister and Green Party politician, comes in. He's advocating for an advanced toll system on the German Autobahns, as the traditional methods have run their course.

"Picture this – we gotta cough up the dough for fixin' and modernizin' our highways, and we ain't got much left in our pockets after loans," Hermann shared with the German Press Agency. "The income from the energy tax, formerly known as the mineral oil tax, is about to take a nosedive over the next few years due to the rapidly electrifying automotive industry. A toll system could be just what the doctor ordered to help us cover our expenses," Hermann explained.

Initially, the Association of German Counties had thought of a motorway toll system after the Swiss model, withhex the funds for a massive chunk of the renovation of dilapidated federal roads. Joachim Walter, the association president, considered a vignette toll of €100 for annual use to be a feasible option.

However, Hermann was quick to voice his criticism. "The €100 vignette idea is simple and quick, but it lacks control and relevance for users," he pointed out. Instead, Hermann proposed engaging in a conversation about a digital, intelligent toll system that adjusts both in time and distance. "That would be fairer and more ecological for everyone," Hermann argued. "We desperately need a smart, forward-thinking approach to a meaningful toll system."

"Winfried Hermann, our Transport Minister and Green Party politician, suggests that a smart and intelligent toll system on the German Autobahns could be a more viable solution for raising funds for infrastructure improvements that are needed on the motorways."

"Criticizing the proposed €100 vignette toll idea, Hermann states that an adjustable toll system in both time and distance would be fairer and more ecological."

"In the conversation about the conceivable toll system, Hermann emphasizes the importance of building a system that appeases environmentally conscious citizens by incorporating smart, forward-thinking approaches."
