Decision forthcoming at ESC without the presence of Stefan Raab - Proposals have already been presented by the Committee of the Regions.
The Southwest Broadcasting Corporation (SWR) will be responsible for the German preliminary round of the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) for the first time in 2026, marking a change from the North German Broadcasting Corporation, who have managed the format for decades.
In a significant departure from the previous format, the German preliminary round 2026 will not be a casting show with several rounds. Instead, there will be only one preliminary round, aiming for a more streamlined process.
Stefan Raab, who served as the chief juror in the previous format, will not be involved in the 2026 preliminary round. This decision comes as the ARD will organise the German ESC selection next year, having reached a mutual agreement not to cooperate with RTL.
The preliminary round will be broadcast at the end of February in the first, while the main event, set to take place in May 2026 in Vienna, promises to be an exciting spectacle.
The ARD justified its decision, stating that it aims to organise the selection independently under the Südwestrundfunk (SWR), focusing on a single final show and avoiding Stefan Raab's involvement. This move is part of an effort to create a fresh and innovative approach to the German ESC selection process.
