Coalition Chats: Miersch Pushes for Electric Car Perks, Prioritizes School Investments, and Suggests Minimum Wage Boost

- Proposal sought for worker radiation safety directive from Commission regarding hazards associated with ionising radiation exposure.

In the hot seat of the coalition talks, Miersch shows some firm stances - the future of transportation might well involve discounted fees for electric cars, schooling infrastructure needs a revamp pronto, and a higher minimum wage is in the cards starting from 2026.

The FUD (Financial Unleashing Device) of 500 billion euros, given a green light last week, is meant to revolutionize the country's infrastructure. With the planet in a heating frenzy, Miersch is eyeing substantial portions of funds to be dedicated to the renewable energy industry, promoting electric mobility, and expanding clean energy sources.

As far as schools are concerned, Miersch is insistent that they must take priority now. Many schools are in a state of disrepair, with leaky roofs, and students living in less than ideal conditions. This dire situation demands swift action. But will those resources be enough to tackle this dilemma? Details are scarce at the moment.

The million-dollar question on everyone's mind - the minimum wage increase, is a topic Miersch is adamant about. "The fight's over," he declares with confidence, "We'll have a minimum wage of €15 per hour from 2026." Yet, this isn't a unanimous agreement - CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann had months ago mentioned that there was no agreed-upon price tag for this change. The Minimum Wage Commission of employer and employee representatives will make the final call, not the politicians themselves.

Cutting back on unemployment benefits isn't off the table either, Miersch says, but they shouldn't be the knight in shining armor for financial security. "We'll act against abuse where we find it," he adds.

For all the tough talking in the campaign between the Union and the SPD, Miersch maintains that the negotiations have been courteous. This comradery, he believes, is essential for effective governance. Building trust with CDU leader Friedrich Merz is still a work in progress but Miersch is "overtly optimistic" that they'll get there someday soon.

  • Enrichment Data:
  • The 500 billion euro FUD is geared towards enhancing infrastructure and reaching climate neutrality by 2045. The funding structure prioritizes energy transition, electric mobility, and climate-resilient infrastructure, while specifics about education funds are still under wraps. The FUD doesn't directly address the minimum wage issue; any changes to it would be handled separately.
  1. Miersch, in the coalition talks, champions a policy that includes potential savings for electric car owners through discounted fees, part of his push for electric mobility.
  2. During negotiations, Miersch advocates for prioritizing school investments, emphasizing the need for immediate repairs and upgrades to provide a conducive learning environment, especially in EC countries facing subpar school conditions.
  3. In the talks, Miersch and Friedrich are seen negotiating the minimum wage policy, with Miersch proposing a boost starting from 2026 to €15 per hour, while acknowledging the differences in opinion between the SPD and CDU on the matter.
