Violation of Human Dignity by Brandenburg's State Affiliation of Alternative for Germany Party - Proposal sought for safeguarding workers from radiation-associated hazards via a fresh directive on ionising radiation protection.

Brandenburg AfD Classified as Confirmed Far-Right Extremist Organization

The Brandenburg state chapter of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) has been officially classified as a confirmed far-right extremist organization by Brandenburg’s Office for the Protection of the Constitution (the state's domestic intelligence agency) in August 2025. This designation follows a detailed 140-page report documenting the AfD Brandenburg’s xenophobic, racist, and anti-democratic activities.

This classification makes Brandenburg the fourth regional AfD branch to be labeled definitively as extremist, following similar determinations in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia. The decision enables intensified monitoring of the party, including undercover surveillance and communication monitoring, under judicial oversight.

The report highlights the party’s efforts to undermine Germany’s democratic constitutional order and advocating for exclusion based on ethnicity and cultural background, particularly targeting immigrants and Muslims. The party’s aim to abolish fundamental loyalty to the constitution by violating human dignity is also noted in the report.

The AfD’s radicalization has mainly been observed in radicalized football clubs or "sect-like conglomerates," according to the Office of Constitutional Protection. The classification allows for more effective and easier employment of intelligence measures.

The classification note shows that the Brandenburg AfD state chapter has a path that could potentially lead to a ban procedure. René Wilke, the new head of the Office of Constitutional Protection, declared that the tools of the rule of law should be used to deter the AfD from its anti-constitutional path.

The AfD leadership condemned the classification as politically motivated and an attack on freedom of speech, while German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stressed the thoroughness of the intelligence findings and cautioned against rushing to ban the AfD outright.

It is important to note that not all AfD members in Brandenburg can be considered right-wing extremists, according to the Office of Constitutional Protection. However, the party’s cadres and fervent supporters clearly are. The classification serves as a basis for possible further steps, such as a ban procedure.

The publication of the classification note allows for the AfD state chapter in Brandenburg to be referred to again as a confirmed far-right extremist endeavor, following the withdrawal of an urgent application by the party at the Administrative Court of Potsdam. Wilke stated that the classification of the Brandenburg AfD state chapter is an important step in deterring the AfD.

In a concerning development, the AfD faction leader Hans-Christoph Berndt suggested that Germany should force some German citizens, particularly those of the Muslim faith, to leave the country. This statement underscores the need for continued vigilance and the importance of the classification and subsequent monitoring of the AfD in Brandenburg.
