Fortuna Düsseldorf Cancels Agreement with Israeli Footballer Amid Social Media Controversy

Fortuna Düsseldorf, the German football club, has decided not to sign Israeli footballer Shon Weissman due to public backlash over his social media posts related to the Gaza conflict.

The club's sports director, Klaus Allofs, has denied accusations of anti-Semitism regarding the non-signing of Weissman. In a statement, Allofs described such accusations as "absurd" and emphasized that the club does not want to be limited by prejudices but found Weissman’s social media conduct unacceptable.

Weissman had posted and liked comments calling to "erase Gaza" and endorsing bombing, which sparked outrage among the club's supporters. The criticism led to online petitions against the transfer, and fan resistance was observed in fan forums and social networks.

The club's statement expressed concern that Weissman's statements and social media activities do not align with Fortuna Düsseldorf's values, and that they contribute to polarization. Allofs believes the club's approach to signing Weissman was legitimate and part of Fortuna Düsseldorf's values, which include not limiting themselves with prejudices.

However, the Jewish Community described the club's approach as "unfortunate" and stated that Fortuna Düsseldorf had unintentionally set signs that are problematic for the Jewish Community due to increasing Israel-related anti-Semitism.

Weissman later explained on Instagram that "the entire context was not considered." His management told the "Rheinische Post" that Weissman regretted "the likes and comments from the bottom of his heart."

The decision not to sign Weissman was made after a thorough examination of his case by Fortuna Düsseldorf. On Friday evening, the club issued a statement following an exchange with the Jewish Community of Düsseldorf and the city's anti-Semitism coordinator.
