Germany's Union Parties to Decide Chancellor Candidate in Spring, According to Saxony's Minister President
Germany's Union parties, comprising the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU), are expected to determine their chancellor candidate for the 2021 federal election in the spring, as stated by Saxony's Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU).
The Union's chancellor candidate for the 2021 election was Armin Laschet, then Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia. Prior to Laschet, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer was CDU party leader and was considered a possible candidate, but she stepped down before the election, leading to Laschet's candidacy. Friedrich Merz, another prominent CDU figure, was also considered a potential candidate but was not selected until later years.
The Union's decision on their chancellor candidate took place in the spring of 2021, following a party leadership change earlier that year. The formal and public announcement of Laschet as the Union’s candidate was expected ahead of the September 2021 federal election.
Currently, the target date set by the chair candidates Norbert Röttgen, Armin Laschet, and Friedrich Merz for the party congress is January 16. However, Kretschmer does not support the idea of the incoming CDU chair making unilateral decisions regarding the chancellor candidate. Instead, he suggests that declaring oneself as a chancellor candidate should be done together with the CSU.
Kretschmer warns against any further postponement of the party congress, and the CDU executive board will decide on the date of the party congress on December 14. The CDU and CSU will "pull together as always" in determining the chancellor candidate.
It is worth noting that no indication shows Ursula von der Leyen or other figures being candidates for the Union's chancellorship in 2021, as her focus was on European Commission leadership at that time and later.
| 2021 CDU/CSU Chancellor Candidate | Status/Notes | |-----------------------------------|--------------------------------------------| | Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer | Initially leader but did not run for chancellor | | Armin Laschet | Official candidate chosen in spring 2021 | | Friedrich Merz | Potential candidate, not chosen in 2021 |
As the party congress approaches, the race to determine the Union's chancellor candidate for the 2023 federal election is heating up, with Norbert Röttgen, Armin Laschet, and Friedrich Merz vying for the position. The final decision will be made at the party congress, though the exact date is yet to be confirmed.
The party congress, scheduled for a date yet to be determined in the upcoming months, will decide the Union's chancellor candidate for the 2023 federal election, marking a significant point in German policy-and-legislation and general news. Michael Kretschmer, Saxony's Minister President, emphasized the importance of the Union parties, CDU and CSU, working together in this political process.
