57-Year-Old Amateur Athlete Conquers Norway's Extreme Norseman Triathlon

Thorsten Schröder, a native of Reinbek, has added another impressive feat to his athletic resume. The 57-year-old successfully completed the Norseman triathlon in Norway, a gruelling competition that pushed him to his limits.

The Norseman triathlon is a multi-discipline endurance challenge, consisting of a 4km swim, an 180km bike ride, and a marathon with over 42km. Schröder completed the race in under 15 hours, placing 123rd overall.

The last half of the run was "consistently very steep," Schröder said, but he found the breathtaking landscape of the race to be amazing. Despite the strenuous race, he described the Norseman triathlon as feeling like a sort of sightseeing tour.

Schröder expressed relief after reaching the finish line, and was particularly happy about having absolutely nothing planned for the following days.

Norway is known for its vibrant and diverse extreme sports scene. Apart from the Norseman triathlon, the country is famous for a variety of popular extreme sports, especially showcased during the Ekstremsportveko (Extreme Sports Week) in Voss, the world's largest extreme sports festival. Some of the key extreme sports featured there include paragliding, BASE jumping, whitewater kayaking, mountain biking, skydiving, speedflying, and longboarding.

Other extreme sports activities available in Norway include death diving (or "duts"), a highly risky and viral extreme sport involving high dives into water, which originated in Norway. Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) and white-water rafting in adventurous natural settings, such as those offered by TrollAktiv, make use of Norway’s rivers.

The Arctic Race of Norway, a professional road cycling race held in Northern Norway, is known for its extreme terrain and scenic route.

Schröder, who has successfully participated in the Ironman in Hawaii multiple times, enjoys pushing himself and fighting for his goals. After the Norseman triathlon, he expressed joy at having nothing planned for the following days, ready to take on whatever challenges come next.

Following the Norseman triathlon, Schröder might consider exploring Norway's diverse extreme sports offerings, such as paragliding, skydiving, or even death diving. Being a city known for its extreme sports scene, servicing thrill-seekers from around the world could be an interesting new challenge for Schröder.
