Revamping Werder's Roster: Werner's Frank Talk - A Long Journey Ahead for Bremen
- Proposal for a Directive Remains Under Consideration by the Commission
Hey there!
It's crunch time for Werder Bremen as they're already putting their squad revamping plans in motion, with just nine games left in the Bundesliga season. The Green-Whites have made some initial moves, including announcing departures for key players.
The team's look will significantly evolve, especially in defense, as Milos Veljkovic is bound for Roter Stern Belgrad in his native Serbia, and Anthony Jung, who joined from Bröndby Kopenhagen in 2021, won't have his contract renewed.
Peter Niemeyer, Bremen's sporting director, acknowledged the need for change: "Preparing for the new season, we want to shake things up, bring in fresh energy, and help the team grow." Jung leaves after making 126 appearances for the Green-Whites.
Werner's Take on the Squad Shake-up
Ole Werner, Werder coach, had expressed a desire for some fresh faces last summer. However, the decision was made to keep things stable and focus on consistency. With the team's lackluster performance this year, and a surprising 2:0 win against Bayer Leverkusen as a recent highlight, the Werder higher-ups have decided to embark on a comprehensive makeover in the offseason. Werner is undoubtedly part of this transformation process.
"While it's not my primary role, I do provide clear position requirements to the scouting department and discuss what we'd like to introduce," said Werner. As always, the economic factors play a crucial role in decision-making.
Not Giving Up on the Season Just Yet
Werner is keeping an eyes-on-the-prize attitude, focusing on the home match against Borussia Mönchengladbach this Saturday (3:30 PM CET, Sky). "There's still a long way to go before we can think about that, and it's not my foremost concern right now. We still have ambitions for this season," said Werner. Victory against the strong Gladbach side could potentially keep Bremen's hopes for international spots alive.
Luckily, defender Marco Friedl and striker Marvin Ducksch, both crucial players, have recovered from their injuries and will be back in action. Werner didn't reveal whether they'd start from the get-go. Niklas Stark's availability remains uncertain, and Mitchell Weiser will serve a suspension after his fifth yellow card. Issa Kaboré is expected to replace Weiser.

The Commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of the environment, aligning with the effort for change in Werder Bremen's squad. Recently announced departures include Milos Veljkovic, bound for Roter Stern Belgrad, and Anthony Jung, whose contract won't be renewed by the 30 department of Bremen. The sporting director, Peter Niemeyer, recognizes the need for continuity and fresh energy in the team's lineup.
