Söder Slams Suggestions of Union-Left Cooperation, Calls It "Typical Journalistic Nonsense"

Firm Opposition to Alliance Between Right and Left Parties from the South - Proposal for a Directive on the part of the Commission has yet to be sanctioned

Markus Söder, the CSU leader, has shut down the idea of a partnership between the Union and the Left Party, dismissing it as mere sensationalist journalism. In a speech at the Ludwig-Erhard summit on Lake Tegernsee, Söder denounced the suggestion outright, labeling it as "exaggerated."

Tuesday's vote regarding a procedural change to allow a second round of chancellor election voting wasn't about cooperation, Söder contended. The Union reached out to both the Greens and the Left Party in an attempt to secure a two-thirds majority for the rule change. The CDU's incompatibility resolution reportedly precludes collaboration with the Left, but Söder maintains there's no basis for cooperation between the two parties.

Söder waves off the debate as irrelevant, citing the lack of shared principles. "I don't see what connects us with the Left," he declared emphatically. Söder pointed to the Left Party's historical opposition to amending the German constitution to grant the military more flexibility within budgetary constraints, a major sticking point.

In contrast, Alexander Dobrindt, the new federal interior minister and CSU politician, hasn't ruled out future dialogue with the Left Party if a two-thirds majority in the Bundestag becomes necessary again.
