Proposal demanded for a worker radiation safety directive from the Commission, focusing on shielding employees from ionizing radiation hazards.
The Free Democrats (FDP) experienced a disappointing outcome in the 2025 German Bundestag election, failing to make a significant impact despite a clear campaign message and heavy investments in social media.
Despite tailoring their campaign around Christian Lindner as a determined renewer and advocate for economic freedom and growth, the FDP struggled to gain support. They hovered just around the critical 5% threshold needed to enter parliament, with polling showing only about 3% prior to the election.
Several factors contributed to this marginal performance. Public dissatisfaction with the incumbent governing coalition, marked by infighting, economic woes, and policy differences, especially between the FDP and the Greens on economic matters like the budget, eroded the FDP’s credibility and appeal.
Germany was facing economic stagnation, recession concerns, and societal pessimism since the financial crisis of 2008, which negatively influenced voter attitudes toward traditionally pro-market parties like the FDP. The rise of the far-right AfD, which surged to its best-ever result (20.4%), also drew support away from centrist parties including the FDP.
Despite heavy investments in social media, the FDP’s campaign visibility did not translate into votes amid the polarized and challenging political environment dominated by concerns over immigration, economic uncertainty, and far-right mobilization.
The FDP barely made it over the 5% hurdle only in Baden-Württemberg and Hesse. Local party leader Kemmerich did not rule out founding a new party after the election. The "D-Day paper" incident shook Christian Lindner’s credibility, causing doubt among former coalition partners regarding his trustworthiness in future coalitions.
The provisional official election results show the defeat of the Free Democrats, with their worst result in Thuringia at 2.8%. The FDP suffered significant losses among young voters (18 to 34 years old) compared to the 2021 federal election.
The fate of the Liberals is uncertain, with no one talking about the FDP a few days after the election of the 21st German Bundestag. Even candidate Christian Lindner was less convincing than four years ago. It is unclear who will succeed Christian Lindner as the leader of the FDP.
Despite the election defeat, liberal thinking and actions, liberal values such as pluralism, tolerance, and belief in individual freedom are crucial for the parliament as a reflection of society. The Springer CEO called for strengthening the FDP, emphasizing the importance of their values in the political landscape.
