In a recent development, Estonia has requested consultations under Article 4 of the NATO treaty following a violation of its airspace by Russia. The incident occurred near the Baltic Sea island of Vaindloo, with three MiG-31 fighter jets entering Estonian airspace without permission.

The Estonian government, led by Prime Minister Kristen Michal, announced this request in Tallinn. Michal stated that such a violation is completely unacceptable and emphasized that NATO's reaction to every provocation must be uniform and decisive. The entire alliance takes this incident seriously, according to Michal's statement.

The fighter jets stayed in Estonia's airspace for a total of 12 minutes. This is not the first time Estonia has reported a violation of its airspace by Russia. Previously, a similar incident occurred on a Friday when three Russian fighter jets entered Estonian airspace for about twelve minutes, prompting Estonia to consider invoking NATO's Article 4 for consultations.

Article 4 of the NATO treaty provides for consultations with allies when a NATO country feels threatened from the outside. This article is designed to ensure the collective defence of all member countries.
