German Tennis Player Daniel Altmaier Shocks World No. 4 Taylor Fritz at French Open

In a shocking upset at the 2025 French Open, 26-year-old German Davis Cup player Daniel Altmaier defeated US Open finalist Taylor Fritz in four sets, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. This victory marks Altmaier's second round advancement in Paris and his second career Top 5 win.

Altmaier excelled on the Simone-Mathieu court with a strong, aggressive, and versatile performance that kept Fritz off balance throughout the match. Although the US Open finalist clinched the second set, Altmaier remained composed and ultimately won the encounter deservedly.

Reflecting on his success, Altmaier acknowledged his suitability against Fritz's game and expressed his affection for competing at Grand Slam tournaments due to his confidence in his physical endurance.

The German tennis player has previously left his mark on Roland Garros, having defeated then No. 8 seed Jannik Sinner in 2023 and reaching the fourth round in 2020 against Matteo Berrettini, who was also ranked No. 8 at the time. Hence, Altmaier has proven his clay-court prowess, particularly at the French Open.

Conversely, Tamara Korpatsch, another German player, exited the tournament in the first round. Despite qualifying for the main draw, she lost to Ukrainian Julija Starodubzewa, 6-2, 1-6, 4-6. The decisive set remained close before Korpatsch succumbed to Starodubzewa's resurgence.

This win over Fritz marked Altmaier's fifth triumph against a Top-10 opponent, with three of these victories coming at Roland Garros. His consistent success on the red clay further cements him as a dangerous floater and clay-court specialist on the tour.

Sports enthusiasts will be intrigued to know that Daniel Altmaier, the German Davis Cup player, not only defeated Taylor Fritz, the US Open finalist, in the French Open but also added a Top-5 win to his career. Excelling in tennis, Altmaier showcased his skills on the Simone-Mathieu court with a strong, aggressive, and versatile performance, emerging victorious in a four-set match.
