Promises Kept: President Trump's Landmark Bill Eliminates Social Security Taxation
The One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB), signed into law by President Trump on July 4, 2025, is a comprehensive tax and social program law. Among its many provisions, the OBBB delivers on President Trump's promise of No Tax on Social Security.
The OBBB achieves this by introducing an additional senior deduction aimed at seniors. This deduction works as a federal income tax reduction, lowering the taxable income seniors report and thus preventing tax liability on Social Security benefits. As a result, 88% of seniors receiving Social Security benefits will pay no tax on their benefits under the OBBB.
The OBBB's senior deduction is designed to ensure more money goes back into the pockets of seniors. Alongside this, the bill includes other provisions like no tax on tips and no tax on overtime, contributing further to lowering tax liabilities overall.
However, the OBBB is a costly piece of legislation, projected to increase the deficit by $3.4 trillion over 10 years. Nevertheless, it aims to provide relief to seniors who earned their Social Security through years of hard work, ensuring that a significant portion of their benefits remains untaxed at the federal level.
