Just when the world thought they'd seen it all from the legendary Herbert Gröneymeier, the man springs a massive surprise! He's taking the baton, folks - this week, the pop icon turns conductor for the Bochum Symphony Orchestra!
Reporting by Stefan Weisemann
"Bochum," "Men," "Humanity". Gröneymeier's career has been etched into the annals of German music history for decades. The signature gravelly voice, the unmatched passion at the piano, and an impressive repertoire spanning rock and pop - that's how we've come to know the 69-year-old superstar.
But a conductor? In front of a crackling orchestra? Unconventional, perhaps - but it seems like Gröneymeier's ready to write another amazing chapter in his illustrious career. This weekend, he'll be leading the Bochum Symphony Orchestra in three stunning performances! House of Music in Bochum on Friday and Sunday, and Essen Philharmonic Saturday.
Classical Tunes and Gröneymeier Symphony
"I've spent a year preparing for this," says Gröneymeier in a recent interview. He even enrolled in a one-year composition course at the University of Music in Cologne. "I'm genuinely excited about it," he added with a smile.
The program promises selections by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff. But Gröneymeier's got tricks up his sleeve - an exclusive treat of his own symphonies will close the performances! No spoilers yet on which tunes we'll be serenaded with. Will Gröneymeier take the spotlight at the microphone or wave the baton? "I'll leave that mystery unsolved, my friend," Gröneymeier would say with his trademark, mischievous grin.

Tickets for these special concerts have been a hot commodity, making this exclusive event a hard-to-crack golden ticket. But not to worry! One of the performances - Saturday's at Essen Philharmonic - will be streamed live and absolutely free in the lovely Stadtgarten nearby. It's a "Public Listening" - no pictures but pure music enchantment!
Gröneymeier's been a maestro before - in 2017, he led the Bochum Symphony Orchestra in a captivating Mozart Symphony. "Delighted to have him again!" said an orchestra representative. And it won't be Gröneymeier's swan song with the orchestra - he's scheduled to take the stage once more in Neumünster, at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival by the end of June.
