Renowned art director and production designer Les Dilley, known for his groundbreaking work on iconic films, peacefully bid adieu on May 20, at the age of 84, due to complications from Alzheimer's.
Born on July 11, 1941, in Rhondda, Wales, Dilley embarked on his unparalleled film career at the tender age of 15, starting as a plastering and construction apprentice at Associated British Picture Corporation. Over the years, Dilley's artistic prowess glittered brightly, stepping up as an assistant art director on Jesus Christ Superstar and Kelly's Heroes. He then showcased his exceptional art direction skills for 1973's Three Musketeers and its 1974 sequel. Breaking free from the shackles of sequels, Dilley joined the creative force behind Star Wars: A New Hope, contributing to the physical build of R2-D2, the sandcrawler, and Luke's landspeeder.
Dilley continued to direct art magic for its sequel, Empire Strikes Back, as well as Raiders of the Lost Ark, Alien, Superman, and An American Werewolf in London*. His striking production designer credits encompassed The Abyss, Exorcist III, Invaders From Mars, Casper, Black Knight, and Deep Impact. Over a career spanning more than six decades, Dilley's talent earned him Oscar nominations for The Abyss, Empire, and Alien, alongside shared wins for Best Art Direction for New Hope and Raiders* with art director Norman Reynolds, who passed away in 2023.
In 2017, after his prolific work on the British kids' show Teacup Travels, Dilley hung up his sculptor's tools and retired. He was later honored with an Outstanding Contribution to Film and Television Award at the British Academy Cymru Awards (BAFTA's Welsh branch) in 2020, where he was praised by legends such as George Lucas and Ridley Scott.
Dilley will be deeply missed by his wife Leslie, five children, and a legion of film enthusiasts who admired his impressive body of work. In a touching statement, his family eulogized him as a man who "was a dedicated and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many.
