Get ready to give a standing ovation! The Franz Werfel Human Rights Award 2025 has been bestowed upon none other than Vitali Klitschko, the illustrious Mayor of Kyiv and former heavyweight boxing champion. This prestigious recognition comes in appreciation of his unwavering dedication to freedom, democracy, and human rights, both within Ukraine and globally.

The Center Against Expulsions Foundation announced its choice, emphasizing that Klitschko's award is a powerful statement of solidarity with those battling for their rights and freedoms worldwide. It serves as a beacon of hope in the midst of these challenging times of war.

The award ceremony will take place in the historical Paulskirche, Frankfurt on June 1. Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) will extol the virtues of our esteemed laureate, while Hesse's Minister President Boris Rhein (CDU) will grace the event with his presence.

Born in the Soviet Union (today's Kyrgyzstan) to Ukrainian parents, Klitschko boasts an impressive boxing career as one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time. Since 2014, he's been serving as the elected Mayor of Kyiv.

Created every two years, the Franz Werfel Human Rights Award carries an endowment of 10,000 euros. It seeks to raise awareness of human rights violations through genocide, expulsion, or the deliberate destruction of national, ethnic, or religious groups. Previous winners include illustrious personalities such as the Romanian President Klaus Werner Johannis, the former Federal President Joachim Gauck, and Nobel laureate Herta Müller.
