Robert Redford, the renowned actor known for his roles in films like 'The Great Gatsby,' 'Out of Africa,' and 'All the President's Men,' has passed away at the age of 89 in his home in Utah.

Born in Santa Monica, Redford grew up in humble circumstances as the son of a bookkeeper. His passion for acting led him on a unique journey, one that took him to the West Coast of the United States and Europe rather than Hollywood. Redford developed his skills and artistic foundation outside of the traditional Hollywood system, reflecting a path focused on diverse theatrical and cinematic experiences rather than starting immediately within Hollywood's studio environment.

His big break came in 1969 with the Western comedy 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,' in which he portrayed the titular Sundance Kid. This role catapulted him to stardom, and Hollywood quickly took notice. However, Redford's dream goal was never Hollywood itself, but rather the opportunity to promote young, critical voices through the arts.

In 1980, Redford founded the Sundance Institute, an organization dedicated to fostering independent filmmaking and nurturing new talent. The Sundance Film Festival, the largest US film festival for independent productions, was established by Redford as a meeting point for the independent film scene. The festival takes place every January.

Redford's acting career spanned over five decades, during which he played a wide range of roles. He could play lover roles with ease, as demonstrated in films like 'The Great Gatsby' (1974) with Mia Farrow, 'Out of Africa' (1985) alongside Meryl Streep, or 'The Way We Were' with Barbra Streisand (1973).

In 1972, Redford played a lead role in the political satire 'The Candidate.' At the age of 81, he played an old bank robber in 'The Old Man & the Gun' (2018). His role as a journalist in 'All the President's Men' (1976), alongside Dustin Hoffman, is particularly noteworthy as it portrayed the real-life Washington Post journalists who brought down Richard Nixon.

Redford was a dedicated environmental activist and nature conservationist. His 'wake-up call' to environmental issues came in 1989 at a conference in Denver. He was deeply committed to preserving the environment and was involved in numerous conservation projects throughout his life.

Redford was married twice, first to Lola Van Wagenen, and later to Sibylle Szaggars, a painter. He had four children, one of whom, James, also a filmmaker, died in 2020 at the age of 58 from cancer.

Meryl Streep, Redford's co-star in 'Out of Africa,' said, 'One of the lions has left us.' Redford's legacy as an actor, director, and environmental activist will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations.
