Prominence Energy Extends Gawler Hydrogen Project Acquisition to 2025

Prominence Energy has secured a crucial extension for its acquisition of the Gawler Hydrogen Project in South Australia, aligning with the company's focus on high-return opportunities in the emerging natural hydrogen sector. The extension, now running until 15 December 2025, follows the award of Petroleum Exploration Licence (PEL) 803 to project partner Gawler Group Holdings, validating the project's potential.

The Gawler Hydrogen Project, ready for accelerated exploration, could become a cornerstone in Australia's natural hydrogen sector. Natural hydrogen, also known as 'white hydrogen' or 'geologic hydrogen,' offers lower production costs, reduced environmental impact, and zero-carbon emissions. Prominence Energy's extended timeline provides a clear roadmap for advancing the project. Immediate priorities include completing regulatory approvals, finalizing acquisitions, and preparing technical work programmes for 2026.

The next phase involves launching field exploration activities under PEL 803, using conventional exploration methods to identify hydrogen accumulations. Technical studies and resource assessments will follow, positioning the project for potential drilling programmes. The regulatory approval process for PEL 803 was completed on 21 August 2025, with the change-of-control approval currently underway.

Prominence Energy's extended acquisition timeline for the Gawler Hydrogen Project allows for a structured approach to exploration and development. With all other conditions precedent satisfied, the company is poised to lead the zero-carbon fuel revolution in Australia's energy sector.
