Projects in Lausitz are reportedly progressing at an astonishing pace, according to Woidke, who describes their speed as "crazy fast."

In a significant stride for the region, Brandenburg's Minister President Dietmar Woidke recently visited Lusatia, praising the transformative projects underway.

Woidke commended the swift construction of the new ICE maintenance workshop of Deutsche Bahn in Cottbus, built in less than 700 days. The workshop, a crucial part of Lusatia's structural transformation due to the agreed coal phase-out, is expected to create 1,200 new industrial jobs, with 580 already in place.

The Minister President also highlighted the record-breaking implementation of the new Medical University in Cottbus. Founded in the summer of 2024, the Medical University of Lusatia – Carl Thiem (MUL-CT) is a project about healthcare of the future, with more than half of the estimated 3.7 billion euros investment coming from the federal government. The state government is providing the remaining funds, totalling 3.6 billion euros, by 2038.

The MUL-CT was developed from the existing Carl-Thiem Clinic in Cottbus, marking the creation of the youngest medical university in Germany and the first state medical university in Brandenburg. Woidke stated that the state is making record time in the implementation of the new Medical University, with the first students expected to enroll next year.

Another milestone for Lusatia was reached with the first car rolling off the production line at the Tesla factory in Grünheide after 861 days. The phase-out of coal-fired power generation by 2038, decided five years ago, is being supported by the state government through two funding pillars.

In a second funding pillar, the federal government is financing further projects in Lusatia, coordinating closely with the state. Moreover, a law was passed providing around 40 billion euros in aid for four coal regions, including Lusatia, to support the coal phase-out until 2038.

Woidke made these statements on Tuesday in Cottbus while kick-starting his visit to Lusatia. The Minister President's visit underscores the significant progress being made in Lusatia, transforming the region into a hub for innovation and sustainable development.
