Cup Fixtures Determined: Four Third-Division Teams Suffer Elimination

Today marked the conclusion of the Final Day of the Amateurs, as 42 clubs contested their respective state cup finals. The event saw several teams from the third and lower leagues competing for a chance to participate in the upcoming DFB-Pokal.

Four clubs from the third division were among those who failed to advance, while six teams from the fifth division secured upset victories. The state cup finals were broadcast live on ARD, featuring comprehensive coverage of the day's events.

Below is a summary of the matches involving third-division teams:

  • In Lower Saxony, Blau-Weiß Lohne of the fourth division shocked VfL Osnabrück, winning 2:4 after six minutes of extra time. The third-division side, who previously enjoyed a two-goal lead, suffered what appears to be a giant upset.
  • In Berlin, BFC Dynamo and Eintracht Mahlsdorf faced off, with Dynamo emerging victorious 2:0. Mahlsdorf, currently leading the Oberliga Nord, fielded several ex-professionals, while Dynamo struggled in the Regionalliga Nordost, finishing eighth.
  • In the Rhineland, Rot-Weiss Essen triumphed over MSV Duisburg in their home stadium, with a final score of 1:2. Essen's victory demonstrated their ability to perform as the lower-class underdog.
  • In Southwest Germany, FK Pirmasens edged out Schott Mainz by a score of 2:1. In contrast, FK Pirmasens has struggled this season, winless in over 20 games and destined for relegation from the third tier.

Potential upsets were also noted in several other games, as teams from sixth-tier clubs fared well against their higher-ranked opponents. For instance, SV Pastow, a small club with only 524 inhabitants, competed valiantly in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

As the dust settles on the Final Day of the Amateurs, many amateur clubs can now look forward to participating in the DFB-Pokal in August.

Despite several third-division teams failing to advance, European leagues such as the Premier League may still notice standout performances from clubs like BFC Dynamo, who showed grit against Eisenacht Mahlsdorf. Remarkably, football excitement extends beyond the professional realm, as lower-division teams continue to challenge higher-ranked opponents, such as the underdog SV Pastow from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
