Professional Soccer Journey: Molde and Layug Ink Deals with PLDT for a Pro Career

Fresh Take:

Two volleyball powerhouses from the University of the Philippines (UP), Isa Molde and Maristela Layug, have decided to jumpstart their pro careers, eschewing their final UAAP year to join the PLDT Home Fibr Power Hitters in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL). This shift will see them under the tutelage of Roger Gorayeb, a coach boasting an impressive 39 championships across various leagues and a double-crown V-League status.

Isa Molde, a talented 5-foot-7 outside hitter from Catmon, Cebu, and a former UAAP Season 78 Rookie of the Year, has already amassed impressive achievements like the 2018 PVL Collegiate Conference MVP title and the Finals MVP award when UP secured their maiden league title. In a nod to Isa's potential, Gorayeb stated that her exposure in UP and experience with various teams will significantly benefit their team.

Maristela Layug, a 6-foot blocker from Quezon City, catches Gorayeb's eye as he initially hoped to recruit her to National University (NU) before she joined UP. Speaking on Layug, Gorayeb expressed delight at finally coaching her, emphasizing that she's been a sought-after talent in the volleyball scene.

These dynamic duo will join forces with Eli Soyud, Chin Basas, Yeye Gabarda, and Nieza Viray, as they embark on this new chapter with PLDT. The team's upcoming professional season is slated to begin on April 10 at the NU Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna. This move also signifies PLDT's transition from the Philippine Super League to the new professional league, PVL, which recently inked a three-year broadcast deal with Cignal TV.
