Kick off:

Footballing extraordinaire Marcel Halstenberg has chosen to draw the curtains on his illustrious career, announcing his retirement through a heartfelt video message. At 33, this southern German stalwart reflects on a remarkable journey that has seen him face off against some of the world's greatest players, proudly wearing the colors of his nation.

A Local Prodigy

Born and raised in Laatzen, just a stone's throw away from Hannover, Halstenberg climbed through the ranks of Hannover 96's youth system, demonstrating exceptional promise early on. His journey took a turn, however, as he moved to Borussia Dortmund II and FC St. Pauli before eventually joining RB Leipzig in 2015, where he truly made his mark.

The Rise to Glory

With RB Leipzig, Halstenberg and the Saxons competed at the highest level, reaching the Champions League and gaining spots on the national team. In total, he secured nine caps for the DFB team, including an impressive goal - testament to his skill and dedication on the pitch.

Family Comes First

Eager to reconnect with his roots, Halstenberg returned to Hannover 2 years ago, drawn by more than just football. "My career wouldn't have been complete without this return," he once stated. As of now, he feels that it is time to put his family first, acknowledging that they "often had to take a back seat" during his whirlwind career.

A Whirlwind Farewell

Halstenberg's official farewell will unfold on Sunday (13:30 CET, Sky) in a home game against SpVgg Greuther Fürth. Fittingly, his final match as a professional footballer will be against Hertha BSC on May 18. If Halstenberg features in both games, he will achieve an impressive total of 138 2. Bundesliga, 165 Bundesliga, 25 DFB-Pokal, and 20 Champions League appearances.
