In a traditional summer visit, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Belarusian counterpart are holding an informal meeting on Valamo today. This annual event, which has taken place in July in the past years of 2019, 2023, and 2024, serves as a backdrop for significant announcements.

During their meeting, Putin announced the commencement of serial production of the highly anticipated "Oreshnik" missile system in Russia. This hypersonic intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) is capable of speeds up to Mach 10 (approximately 12,000 km/h) and has a range between 3,400 and 5,500 km. The system features maneuverable reentry vehicles (MaRV) that can change direction mid-flight, making interception by missile defenses extremely difficult.

The "Oreshnik" system can carry either conventional or nuclear warheads, including multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRVs), with up to six hypersonic glide vehicles per missile. The first serial complex "Oreshnik" and the first serial rocket have already been produced.

The delivery and deployment of the Oreshnik system in Belarus are underway and are expected to be finalized by the end of 2025. Belarus has selected launch sites, and preparatory work is proceeding according to plan, with expectations of concluding before the year ends.

The missile was first combat-tested in Ukraine in late November 2024 with a non-explosive payload, demonstrating its high precision and kinetic damage potential. The deployment of this system near NATO borders, particularly from Belarus, significantly shifts the military balance due to its speed, maneuverability, and deployment capabilities.

Putin also stated that the issue of supplying the "Oreshnik" missile system to Belarus will likely be resolved this year. Work is underway to prepare future positions for the "Oreshnik" missile system in Belarus.
