Bundeswehr Procurement Office Head Slams Sluggish Defense Industry Expansion, Bureaucracy Snags

Criticism levied by Procurement Office Head towards slow progress in defense sector's growth - Procurement office head voices concern over sluggish growth in the military equipment industry.

Having been the head of the Bundeswehr's procurement office for a couple of years, Annette Lehnigk-Emden has thrown shade at the defense industry's sluggishness in expanding its production capacities. "If the industry doesn't step up, we can move mountains - we'll still be short on equipment at the end," she bluntly stated in an interview with the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung". Deliveries are imminent, Lehnigk-Emden asserted, the ball is in the industry's court.

Her advice is simple: Construct those halls, gather parts, and lay down some steel. Industry players need to cut back on excessive production times.

Lashing Out at Economic Red Tape

Lehnigk-Emden didn't spare the industry's internal bureaucracy either. "The industry's red tape is heavier than we've got," she quipped. "I think there's more paper-pushing over there than here." Her own office, based in Koblenz, has recently witnessed a relaxation of budget constraints for defense spending, which promises a significant surge in procurement.

Lehnigk-Emden ward off criticisms directed her way, stating, "The public debates aren't fair." "We're just the purchasing agents to the outside world, but no one ever recognizes the other parties involved who work on product design for years on end." The procurement office is unfairly blamed when the industry pushes substandard gear. "If you think we're boring, mechanical purchasing bureaucrats, then you've got the wrong picture."

Amazingly, various economic sectors lament excessive bureaucracy. Entrepreneurs and industry associations consider regulations a hindrance to business growth, which is a hot topic during coalition negotiations.
